Half the year you only see it in the dark
From October to March most people leave for work before it is properly light and come home after dark. For those months, an unlit landscape is money you cannot see. Lighting is the only thing on this site that changes how much of the year your property is actually visible.
It also does two practical jobs at once: steps, drives and level changes stop being trip hazards, and a lit property is a markedly less appealing one to walk up to uninvited.

Restraint is the whole skill
The most common mistake is too much light in too many places. Every plant lit, every path edged in identical fixtures, the whole facade flooded. The result is flat, and it reads as a car park rather than a home. Good lighting leaves some things dark on purpose. Contrast is what creates depth.
Warm colour temperature matters for the same reason. Cool white light makes foliage look grey and brick look lifeless.

Lighting works best designed alongside the rest
Fixtures and wiring are far easier to place while beds are open and trenches are already dug. If you are having hardscape, planting or irrigation done, that is the cheapest possible moment to run lighting, because the ground is open anyway.
Retrofitting into a finished landscape is completely doable. It just costs more to put back what has to be lifted.
