That sounds like a small thing until you have had the alternative. A rotating crew does not know where the irrigation heads are, which bed you replanted last month, or that the back gate sticks. Ours does, because it is the same people on your property every week.
You are told which day the crew will be out, so you can plan around it. Gates unlocked, dogs in, cars moved.
What a weekly visit includes
- Mowing at the right height for the grass type and the season, with the pattern alternated so the turf does not lean.
- Edging along drives, walks and beds. This is most of what makes a lawn read as maintained from the street.
- String trimming around fences, posts, trees and anything the mower cannot reach.
- Blowing hard surfaces clean, so clippings do not end up in the beds or on the drive.
Cut height is not a detail
The single most common cause of a struggling Upstate lawn is cutting it too short in summer. Scalped turf loses its shade at the soil surface, dries out faster, and hands the space straight to crabgrass. We cut to the grass type: fescue high, bermuda and zoysia lower and we change with the season rather than running one setting all year.
Sharp blades matter for the same reason. A dull blade tears the leaf instead of cutting it, which leaves a whitish, frayed tip across the whole lawn a day later.
Where the stripes come from
Stripes are not paint. They are the grass bent in alternating directions, catching light differently, which means they only show up on a lawn that is healthy enough, dense enough and cut with the right equipment. A lawn that will not stripe is usually telling you something about its thickness or its soil.
When mowing is not the answer
Sometimes weekly cutting will not fix what is wrong. Thin patches in the same spot every year usually mean drainage. A lawn that browns in July while the neighbour’s does not usually means irrigation. And a lawn that is more weed than grass is often past rescuing and cheaper to replace with new sod.
