The cheapest thing that changes how a property looks
Nothing else costs this little and changes the read of a property this much. Fresh mulch and a re-cut edge will do more for kerb appeal in one afternoon than almost any other work on this site, which is why it is the first thing people do before listing a house and the thing HOA boards ask for before spring.
It is also not only cosmetic. Mulch holds soil moisture through an Upstate summer, keeps soil temperature stable, suppresses weeds, and slows the erosion that heavy clay and heavy rain cause together.
Mulch or pine straw?
Both work. They fail differently, which is what should decide it.
- Hardwood mulch lasts longer, looks more formal, holds moisture better, and stays put on flat ground. It is heavier to install and costs more per season.
- Pine straw is lighter, cheaper, and knits together so it holds much better on slopes where mulch floats away in a storm. It breaks down faster and needs refreshing more often.
Plenty of properties use both. Mulch in the front beds where it is seen, pine straw on the banks and the back where volume matters more than finish.
The edge is doing most of the work
A crisp, hand-cut trench edge between bed and lawn is what makes mulch look installed rather than dumped. It also stops grass creeping into the bed and keeps mulch out of the turf. We cut the edge as part of the job, not as an extra.
Depth, and the mulch volcano
Two to three inches is right. Deeper does not suppress more weeds. It starves roots of air and holds water against stems. And mulch piled up the trunk of a tree, the thing you see on half the properties in any neighbourhood, traps moisture against the bark and slowly kills the tree it was meant to protect. We pull mulch back off trunks and stems.
When to do it
Spring is the obvious refresh, and it is when most properties want it. A lighter autumn top-up before winter is worth it on beds that took a beating over summer. On the 12-month program the timing is handled for you and folded into the monthly invoice rather than landing as a separate bill.

Mulch usually goes in alongside plant and landscape installation, and pairs with seasonal leaf removal in autumn. On slopes where mulch keeps washing out, the real answer is sometimes drainage rather than more mulch.
